a tribute to jj's

if you live in kansas city, by now you know about the tragic fire that leveled a city landmark last night.  jj's on the country club plaza was a cornerstone of the historic shopping and dining district, it had been in business for almost 28 years.  the wine list was unmatched - over 1800 bottles - the servers, so incredibly knowledgeable and the atmosphere was perfect for meeting coworkers after work, dining with your sweetie or grabbing a nightcap with your girlfriends like i had the pleasure of doing just recently.

several people in our neighborhood reported hearing and even feeling the blast.  and although we weren't among them, we could certainly see the effects in the sky just above our home.  (you can actually see the explosion as it happened here.)

i was just about to do one of our monthly features on the local kansas city establishment, but today it is more of a tribute to the neighborhood gem.  a true loss of what wine spectator called "one of the best wine lists in the world" and what friends and neighbors called simply "the best."

so this one is for jj's, a memorable piece of kansas city history, and one that will not soon be forgotten.

cheers.

please feel free to share your favorite memories of jj's in the comment section below.

  1. Such a tragedy, in more ways than one. :-( It's nice that you have these pictures of the place.
